I have a film SLR to learn the basic with and and want to carry a camera with me all of the time to catch those fleeting moments you spot when you’re out and about, but I am not yet confident enough with my SLR to set it up and take a shot quickly enough.

Can you recommend a good digital compact for this purose while I get to grips with my SLR? I am a budding photojournalist so need to be able to get a shot off in the blink of an eye.
I need a relaible compact with a good range of functions and I am guessing a high pixel count, but as a student the cheaper the better. Any ideas? PS I’m in the UK.
